Democratic candidates between a rock and a hard place

Democratic Congressional and Senate candidates find themselves in something of a dilemma. Their leadership in Congress thinks the new Arizona law is "draconian" (according to an article in Politico). Why would Democratic leadership find a law "draconian" that does nothing more than federal law that has been on the books since 1952? Do they also think their own federal law is draconian? Or course they don't because they make sure federal law is not enforced.

Meanwhile, in many cases the Democrats' constituents overwhelmingly support the Arizona law. Stuck between the wishes of their leadership and the demands of their constituents is not a comfortable position for Democratic candidates to find themselves. So how will they handle that situation? Just not talk about it, according to a Democratic pollster, via Politico::

“We cannot have an election about health care and immigration this fall,” veteran Democratic pollster Paul Maslin said. “If that’s the election we’re in, then shame on us, because we’re going to drop a whole bunch of seats.”
