They thought President Obama's health care reform would be popular, even while polls showed it was not. But they rammed it through anyway, and now most Democratic candidates are running away from it as a campaign issue.

President Obama and congressional Democrats spent the past two years running away from the issue that was really important to voters, which was and remains jobs. The President promised to focus on creating jobs, but he spent the first year of his presidency working on ramming the health care bill throgh Congress. Now Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has called for an investigation of anyone who opposes the building of a Ground Zero Mosque. President Obama has been pushing policies that are just not popular with a majority of the American people. Independent voters are abandoning him, which is bad news for Democratic congressional candidates. Meanwhile, conservative voters are highly energized for the 2010 midterm elections, as reported by Michael Gerson in the Washington Post:
Independents have fled the Obama coalition, largely out of concern about debt, deficits and spending. Intensity is all on the Republican and conservative side. Convinced that they just didn't do a good enough job selling it the first time around, they seem quite sure (again) that an unpopular bill will become popular if only sold properly. What they don't seem to understand is that the more a majority of the American people learned about the bill, the less they liked it.

So a politically tone-deaf Democratic Party will now go out and spend a lot of money trying to convince the people to like something they don't like. The 2010 midterm elections are already shaping up as a disaster for Democrats, but it could get even worse according to the Oklahoman:
Despite the claim the health care bill is paid for, it is not. Only slick accounting tricks allowed the Democrats to say their health care bill would not be the cause additional government borrowing. Outside studies have concluded the health care bill will bring on additional debt.
Here's what Investor's Business Daily has to say about it:

What have the congressional Democrats who rammed through their health care overhaul been watching over the years as both hard and soft socialist governments have either collapsed, continued to bring misery or become unsustainable? Despite ample evidence that a welfare state cannot thrive, these lawmakers have forced on the country a "reform" that will load Americans with a burden they will not long be able to bear.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7851796363656847996.post-62214423014166637912010-06-07T17:58:00.000-07:002010-06-07T17:58:54.677-07:00President Obama is not inspiring confidence in his ability to handle a crisisAs the White House stumbles along trying to figure out how to handle the oil spill crisis in the Gulf of Mexico, it's becoming increasingly clear that the President's lack of executive experience is having a major impact on his administration's inability to get something done. Juan Williams has some thoughts on this topic, via Commentary Magazine:

But when it comes to the crisis, when it comes to the gulf oil spill, the wars, the recession, they feel as if it’s being imposed upon them, rather than taking the helm. I think that’s what Americans are sensing right here. And I think it’s the source of their problem at the moment. Are you able to handle a crisis in a convincing way that inspires confidence? And so far, the president hasn’t done that.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7851796363656847996.post-87338782483019615772010-06-06T07:11:00.000-07:002010-06-06T07:11:38.320-07:00Republicans will keep up the pressure on White House job offersCongressmen Lamar Smith (R-Texas) and Darrell Issa (R-California) are planning to keep the pressure on the Democrats to look into the job offers made by the White House to two Senate candidates in Democratic primaries. Democratic candidates Andrew Romanoff of Colorado and Joe Sestak of Pennsylvania have both said they were offered jobs by the White House to get out of the primaries.

Both Smith and Issa have said they will use the tools available to them, as the ranking members of two Congressional committees, to force the Democrats to hold hearings on the issue. In the months leading up to the 2010 midterm elections, the Democrats will be hoping this issue goes away, as reported in the Hill:

The summer before a critical election, Democratic leaders and chairmen will likely prevent any committee action aimed at forcing cooperation from the Obama administration, but Issa and Smith have a number of parliamentary weapons at their disposal that could continue to fan the political fires over the growing controversy.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7851796363656847996.post-55394782248744761352010-06-05T20:27:00.000-07:002010-06-05T20:27:47.938-07:00Chicago-style politics at the White HousePresident Obama promised his administration would be the most open and transparent in history. Remember the way he promised his health care negotiations with Congress would be on C-SPAN? Or that legislation would be posted on the internet for a few days before he signed it?

We've discovered his promises aren't worth much. Even people on the left are unhappy that he's broken some campaign pledges, such as his promise to close the Guantanamo detention facility.

Now we're finding out about job offers made to primary challengers, hoping to keep them from defeating the Democratic Party's favored incumbents. The Obama administration is not what Candidate Obama promised it would be, and Calvin Woodward of Associated Press has something to say about it:

Barack Obama, being from Chicago, knows there are two basic ways to play foul in politics.

One is to break the law.

The other is to keep it legal, if shadily close to the line. It may not stink to high heaven, but it smells a little.

In the 2008 campaign and after, Obama said he'd tolerate neither as president, and he set the bar high.

How's he doing now?

Well, it's not all smelling like roses on the political front.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com
