Why the United States will not go the way of Europe

In this great article by John Tamny in Forbes, he explains why Americans will not let this country go the way of Europe, even while the Democrats and the left try to take us in that direction:

Although the Obama health care bill passed, it did so despite a majority of Americans being against it. An unfortunate bill on its best day, the happy result there is that according to a Wall Street Journal op-ed by Pew Research Center President Andrew Kohut, "By almost every conceivable measure, Americans are less positive and more critical of their government these days."

Kohut went on to point out that the general public "now wants government reformed and a growing number want its power curtailed." Regarding the size of government, Kohut notes that a "desire for smaller government is particularly evident since Barack Obama took office.

"What this tells us -- and perhaps this explains why the markets have been moving up over the past year -- is that Americans have been exposed to big government and they don't like it. Far from a scenario in which we're set to become the next Europe, Americans have been woken up to the possibility, and they're ready to reject our lurch toward European statism in November.
